Act proactively and orient yourself to the state of the art

Occupational safety is an issue that is becoming increasingly important for companies due to developments in the ESG sector. Nobody can afford to treat this area peripherally any more and allow themselves many accidents at work.

Accidents at work usually leak to the outside world and represent a considerable reputational risk. For this reason, companies today must also act proactively in occupational health and safety, as in the classic core areas of the company, and orient themselves to the state of the art.

We support you in reducing the number of accidents

Occupational safety is an issue that is becoming increasingly important for companies due to developments in the ESG sector. Nobody can afford to treat this area peripherally any more and allow themselves many accidents at work. Accidents at work usually leak to the outside world and represent a considerable reputational risk.

For this reason, companies today must also act proactively in occupational health and safety, as in the classic core areas of the company, and orient themselves to the state of the art. It is therefore necessary to proactively manage the following issues in particular – usually over and above official requirements:

Topics that should be managed proactively

  • Ongoing risk assessment of machines, hazardous substances and workplaces

  • Ongoing assessment of incident risks (e.g. fire protection, explosion protection)

  • Risk assessment after occupational accidents and derivation of improvement measures

  • Raising awareness of occupational safety among employees

Safety culture and behavioral change

In many companies, the picture is that despite intensive efforts in the area of occupational safety, the number of accidents cannot be reduced any further. In our experience, dedicated management of the legal requirements can only bring accident figures down to a certain, stagnant level. Experience has shown that a further reduction in the number of accidents can only be achieved through additional measures that go beyond the legal requirements, such as establishing a safety culture, raising employee awareness, managers acting as role models, inspections/audits by managers or regular communication on safety issues.

Safety culture and behavioral change – advantages:

  • Reduction in accidents at work
  • Reduction of downtimes
  • Minimization of liability risk due to fewer accidents at work
  • Improvement in employee satisfaction

“Safety is as important as productivity, the quality of our products, costs and the morale of our employees.” Walter S. Carpenter, DuPont President, 1946

“Establishing a safety culture is a long-term process. Du Pont is so far along because they started a very long time ago! ”
Walter S. Carpenter, DuPont President, 1946

External safety expert

The Employee Protection Act (ASchG) requires companies to employ so-called preventive services. These include safety specialists (SFK), occupational physicians (AM) and other experts. The preventive services must advise employers as well as employees, safety representatives and works councils on occupational health and safety issues, support them in fulfilling their occupational health and safety obligations and participate in the occupational health and safety committee. Employers must ensure that the workplace is supervised by the preventive services in accordance with the Employee Protection Act.

In workplaces with up to 50 employees, AUVA prevention specialists or the employer model (performed by the employer) can also be used for the safety specialist. The working hours of preventive staff are legally defined by the ASchG as follows:

The following also applies: a supplement of 0.5 hours is charged for night work, seasonal workers and part-time workers are charged on a pro rata basis.

Allocation of prevention time

The allocation of prevention time is regulated by law and must be structured as follows:

  1. at least 40% to the safety specialist (SFK)
  2. at least 35% to the occupational physician (AM)
  3. Up to 25% to other suitable specialists such as occupational psychologists, ergonomists, chemists, toxicologists, etc.

If no experts are consulted, the 25% is to be divided between SFK and AM.

The PFK must keep records of their working hours and activities (inspections, consultations, investigations) and submit an annual report (activities, suggestions for improvement, impact of their activities on prevention measures in the company) to the client.
