Energiemanagement

Reduce your energy costs

Energy management systems (EnMS) are an important tool for reducing energy costs and contributing to climate change.

When setting up an energy management system, it is particularly important not to create a formal system, but a system that is also put into practice and has a positive cost/benefit ratio.

An energy management system can be certified by an accredited certifier. Annual external audits must be carried out for this purpose.

Advantages of a certified energy management system

  • Improving employee motivation through commitment to climate protection
  • Sensitizing employees to topics relevant to climate protection
  • Minimization of liability risk through assured compliance with legal provisions
  • Gaining the trust of employees, customers, authorities, neighbors and the public
  • Cost savings in energy and material flows
  • Use of certification in marketing and advertising
  • Regular external input to improve the EnMS
  • Administrative simplifications, e.g. in Austria in accordance with the Energy Efficiency Act (no mandatory implementation of an energy audit for 50001 certification)
  • Increase in insurance and creditworthiness

ISO 50001

ISO 50001 is an international standard that applies worldwide and can be used by any organization. It is currently available in the 2018 version. According to ISO 50001, organizations must essentially meet the following requirements:

  • Definition of the scope of application of the EnMS
  • Definition of an energy policy
  • Determining the requirements and expectations of stakeholders
  • Identification of risks and opportunities in connection with the energy aspects, legal and other (binding) obligations and other requirements of interested parties
  • Determination and regular evaluation of energy consumption on the basis of energy performance indicators
  • Determining the relevant energy law provisions and ensuring compliance with them
  • Regular definition and tracking of energy targets
  • Definition of the EnMS-relevant organizational and operational structure
  • Promoting employee awareness
  • Take precautions in emergencies and take appropriate measures
  • Initiation of corrective and preventive measures
  • Regular performance of internal audits and management reviews

Introduction of an energy management system:

The implementation of an energy management system incl. Ideally, certification takes about 6-12 months and essentially consists of the following steps:

  • As-is analysis of operational energy management
  • Definition of the basic structure and requirements for the EnMS
  • Carrying out an energy assessment and defining energy performance indicators
  • Survey of the legal compliance status and preparation of a legal register
  • Development of energy targets and programs
  • Definition of tasks and responsibilities
  • Identification and definition of energy-relevant processes
  • Definition of the required written regulations
  • Preparation of EnMS documentation (e.g. manual, procedural instructions and work instructions)
  • Conducting workshops and training sessions to implement the newly defined regulations
  • Implementation of an internal audit
  • Selection of the certification organization and performance of the certification audit

Certification according to ISO 50001

Certification in accordance with ISO 50001 can be carried out by accredited certification bodies. In Austria, for example, these are Quality Austria, TÜV Süd, TÜV Austria, LRQA and BV.
